In the beginning of December, I made a post announcing that there was going to be a live webcast tour to launch Kink‘s new site The Upper Floor. In the post I explained what I understood the content and theme of the site was going to be; literally a decadent Story of O recreation. Since then, as I’ve been traveling and returning, slowly getting caught up with everyone’s media, I’ve been keeping a steady eye on both the Upper Floor’s galleries and stories from friends who have participated in Upper Floor scenes/shoots/parties. It’s all utterly fascinating.
Here’s my read of the scene: take the theme and think about it as someone’s wildest, kinkiest dreams come true — but with sophistication and class; this ain’t no Barbie-twincest Hugh Hefner fantasy (read: they’re not keeping the bar low for sexual fantasy). Imagine a reality TV show that is The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty and Story of O with a touch of the fantastic book Carrie’s Story mixed in, but acted out in real life, with real people. An elaborate castle. Money is not an object; the sky’s the limit for decadent parties, outfits, scenarios, everything. The most beautiful, willing-to-do-anything (but smart and spicy) models. No holds barred for sexual fantasies (within sanity, of course). And any fantasy can be created. What does this look like? The Upper Floor. The great part is knowing that every aspect of safety is followed from start to finish; it ain’t Porn Valley health standards. The women are acting out their own fantasies, and also the fantasies they think are most exciting to try out. On top of it all, my friends who have been going to the ‘parties’ (sex workers, going to work) have been ditching friends and nights out to essentially go to work in the Upper Floor: instead of the other way around, ditching work for friends.
It’s totally compelling to watch this all play out in real life. Knowing the people involved, watching the site, living in San Francisco with a (literal) view of the castle. I wonder where it will end up and how it will evolve. I really wish this was a proper TV series in so many ways, but it’s way hardcore porn, so that will never happen.
