I’ve been crazy-busy writing, editing and doing interviews for the past few days, but I figured the best way to stage a comeback is much like the Bride of Frankenstein herself: back from the dead, hotter than ever. This photoset comes via Praemedia via i09 (big images, great writeup) via Frankenstenia (who has the best text) — but originates from the really fabulous group modern-antique photo site RetroAtelier (and the whole original photoset is here). Interestingly, as for the original movie, James Whale did not want to make a sequel to Frankenstein, and only did so when Universal harassed him for no less than 4 years to do so. The bride, Elsa Lanchester was only 5’4″ (my height) but for the role was placed on stilts that made her 7′ tall. The bandages were placed so tightly on her that she was unable to move and had to be carried about the studio and fed through a straw. Among the actresses under consideration by director James Whale to play the role of the monster’s mate were Brigitte Helm and Louise Brooks.
