According to my pal Steve at Adrants, this Sprite commercial “was banned in Germany though it’s listed as spec work on YouTube.” I have to wonder if Sprite and other companies don’t just do these under the radar and release them like this because of the viral value… But who cares — it’s a wonderfully dirty ad.
It is certainly a mock-up. The language, for one thing, strikes this here native speaker of German as something that was written by someone who is not a native speaker him- or herself. The German ad slogan was “Hör auf Deinen Durst”, not “Befolgen Sie Ihren Durst”. That would be an easy mistake to make for someone starting from the English “Obey your thirst”, but not for someone actually familiar with the German ad campaign. Or idiomatic German, for that matter, which the latter is certainly not.
But yes, it is a wonderfully dirty ad. :-)
We have a few universities covering all aspects of film and movie production, direction, camera, effects, CGI etc in Germany. When they do examns, they usually need to make a short film for a certain topic. Often it is an advertising clip, and the students need to cover everything from casting, to script, to filming and post processing.
Instead of taking phantasy products, very often real world products are used for these clips. This puts the product inte a certain frame, and the students can work with that but also play with expectations. More often than not, actual representatives of the various brands are among the jury, and it also happens that students get their first job with the company for which they made a mock-up commercial.
I am not current (anymore) about the examn works of these academies, but this commercial strikes me very much as such a mock-up advertising from a movie university. There’s some fabulous other examples out there like the (ground-)racing airplanes for a mock-up XBox commercial, or the “access denied” one for Microsoft Windows, where the guy unsuccessfully tries to open to bra of his lover and gets a password dialogue.
