- The Village Voice has launched an investigation into the numbers behind Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore‘s anti-child-sex-trafficking campaign, and it turns out trans kids (and literally any underage “outsider” has been lumped into their statistics. “The real issue is that no one has called out Kutcher and Moore for their underlying thesis. The underage-prostitution panic has been fueled by a scientific study that was anything but scientific.” Real Men Get Their Facts Straight (Village Voice)
- Model Velvet d’Amour is the “plus size icon” on the cover of June’s Vogue Italia: Here is her take on Vogue Italia’s issue, body diversity in high fashion imagery and the commonly-espoused theory that fashion’s embrace of larger women encourages obesity. “We need fashion to catch up to women of size” (Frockwriter)
- “It scares me sometimes but i think once I reach my goal i will be very confident in my curvy…dare i say SEXY body,” Becky recently wrote on Stop Hating Your Body. She opened up about her issues with anorexia, the disease that landed her in the hospital for seven months last year. “My goal now is actually to gain even more weight and get to a size 12, eventually applying to be a plus-size model,” Becky wrote. - The Human Rights Campaign has just launched its LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Campaign; my Aunt Cecilia features in a moving video that tells her story of nearly dying from discriminatory healthcare practices as a trans woman, and gives practical and solid tips on how to find (and demand) non-discriminatory healthcare. - Dan Savage believes monogamy is right for many couples. But he believes that our discourse about it, and about sexuality more generally, is dishonest. Some people need more than one partner, he writes, just as some people need flirting, others need to be whipped, others need lovers of both sexes. Dan Savage on the Virtues of Infidelity (NYT)
- As it happens, Quentin Tarantino has a foot fetish – specifically, and according to a very sex-negative, quite shitty and sex-shaming email recently published on gossip blogs – he’s into shrimping. I’m not keen to give the email or attitudes behind it any props, but I do want to a) correct the casting of the fetish, and b) call out how fucked up it is to see this meanspirited “look at the freaks” attitude about an average and fairly common sexual fetish. Here’s a link if you want to see it for yourself, sadly this was the least shaming post I found: Tarantino Toe Sucking Sex Email (Gawker)
I agree, e. I am amazed at how nasty folks have been about a simple foot fetish. Some people could clearly do with getting in touch with their *own* sexual fantasies, rather than suppressing it all and taking it out on others.
Thanks so much, Violet.
The foot fetish itself isn’t disturbing, the fact that she engaged in a sex act that she didn’t want to out of desperation is.
I agree with Ma’ayan that the “plus sized” woman looks very healthy. However, I am sure camera angel helps. I find it a great article! Go plus sized women!
I’m not scared of fetishes. I’m more concerned Velvet D’Amour being called a “plus-sized” woman when she actually looks in the normal range of weight measurement, very healthy, and toned. Maybe another camera angle will prove me somewhat wrong, but I doubt by much. The fashion industry wants its models to be a certain body type for presentation. I really wish more people would get the message out there that most model’s proportions are not typical.
You have to be REALLY careful divulging if you have a foot fetish. There’s a lot of negative views about it and for some reason it is considered creepy having one. Just a list I pulled off of Wikipedia who else has a foot fetish.
